Chapter Five

~ Allie ~

“I missed you.” My fingers ran along Jed’s forearm while his arms wrapped around me, his warm body curled to my back. I knew it was manipulative to beg him to hold me, but I could tell Jed was keeping himself back. Even so, I had a feeling he was my mate. Despite that, he seemed determined to merely be my guardian.

I didn’t need another guardian. I needed my man. Until he figured that out I’d stick to him like glue.

“You might not believe it,” I continued, “but it’s true. I didn’t want to leave you behind. We had to though. You weren’t in danger the way we were. Three of us running was a risk.”

“I had to escape too,” he confessed. “They knew I wasn’t human. Once they figured out what I was, Bob and Judy started lining up bidders to take me. They weren’t exactly discreet.”

“No.” Bob and Judy had run the group home, and had made Cinderella’s stepmother look like mother of the year. “Lo heard them planning to auction the two of us off as soon as we turned eighteen. Back then, we didn’t understand about Chosen. We thought they were involved with human trafficking.”

“Almost as bad.”

He’d stilled behind me, and I turned in his arms, pressing my face into his chest. Having him near again calmed my soul, and I hadn’t even realized it had been in upheaval. While I’d known running away from that group home had been the right thing to do, but it had hurt to leave our friend Jed behind.

“I’m sorry.”

His fingers sifted through my hair and he pressed his lips to my crown. Did he treat all the girls like this if they were upset?

“Nothing to be sorry for.” He cuddled me into him, his palm rubbing circles on my back. It was the most cherished and cared for I’d ever felt. I couldn’t remember something like this, even when I tried to search backward into the fuzzy images to my parents.

“Jed,” I whispered.

“Mmm…”

“Thank you for coming for me.”

“I couldn’t not…”

Craning back my head, I looked up at him, breathing in his spicy scent. It was one only monsters had, and it appealed to me, seeming to curl through my body and down to my toes.

“Because you’re my mate.”

“No, I’m not. It’s just the natural pull of a Chosen to a monster. The connection of old friends.”

I didn’t think so, but I’d spend the coming days proving otherwise. And I was totally sleeping here in his arms as much as possible.

With some sleep, everything seemed less overwhelming while Jed showed me around. The more we were together, the more I was sure he was wrong.

“All the quarters have small kitchenettes, but this is where we actually eat,” he told me as we walked through the main floor. There were hallways in all directions off the general space. He told me some of them led to classrooms for the few young dragons, labs for the scientists, computer tech and security.
